Mark first approached Gary at the end of 1987 after Phil had left Level 42 to become a fully-fledged member of the band. Gary went on to write If You Were Mine on the bands Guaranteed album in 1991. He left the band to work with other artists and then started to release his own solo work before rejoining Marks group that later became Level 42.
